Unwanted baby-girls in Azerbaijan
Chart

According to a 2012 report by the Guttmacher Institute, Azerbaijan has the highest total abortion rate in the world, with women having on average 2.3 abortions in their lifetimes. Between 2005 and 2009 almost 10 percent of potential female births in Armenia and Azerbaijan did not occur because of prenatal sex selection, another report found.

Official data revealed elevated sex ratios at birth in Armenia (117), Azerbaijan (116) and Georgia (121),
but not in other post-Soviet states. According to DHS data, sex ratios were high in Armenia and Azerbaijan for first births (138 and 113, respectively); if the first child was a girl, the sex ratio in Armenia was even higher for the second birth (154). Overall, the number of girls born in these countries in 2010 was 10% lower than expected, consistent with 1,972 sex-selective abortions in Armenia and 8,381 in Azerbaijan. Sex ratios did not vary by birth order in Moldova.

In 2013 ratio per 100 new born girls was 124 boys.

Chart of birth rate presents the regions where rate of baby-boys are higher than in other regions. Baku has a large population and we can put it separately in our analyses. Aran, Lankaran and Ganca Gazakh are the places there boys born more than girls. It is official statistics of State Statistics Committee of Azerbaijan per 2013 year.

Table 1.

Azerbaijan has 10 economic regions. Baku as a capital with big amount and higher income of population is calculating separately.

Predominance of males under 20-24 age group in comparison with  females could be characterized with the high rate of new-born male children. However, high rate of death level among men over 20 years old, vice versa, brings to high number of women in all age groups.

Death level among men in all age groups compared to women is higher (excluding age of 80 and over). Starting from 25 years old this difference is significantly increasing.
